Philip is a Partner in our Charities team and specialises in advising charities and private individuals on a wide range of contentious matters. He understands the concerns of charities when they are faced with any form of litigation. He is well known for being able to strike the right balance between avoiding court proceedings wherever possible and being a successful and robust litigator when necessary. Philip is a keen advocate of alternative dispute resolution and regularly represents charities and individuals at settlement meetings and mediation. Philip is an expert in handling a range of disputes involving the administration of an estate or trusts (often involving instances of fraud), challenges to wills on grounds of testamentary capacity, lack of knowledge and approval, improper execution and undue influence. In addition to this Philip regularly defends claims against estates brought under the Inheritance Act 1975 and defends claims for proprietary estoppel. He also handles disputes involving lifetime gifts and has advised a number of charities in relation to Charity Commission investigations, regulatory compliance cases and formal statutory inquiries. He regularly works with PR agencies and in-house media teams to assist charities to manage their reputation.
